China rebound boosts packaging market

Shanghai, 7th May 2010 - Following the uncertainty of 2009, China started 2010 with an astonishing 11.9%, year on year growth in the economy for the first quarter of 2010. Consumer demand has replaced exports as the engine of growth, with Chinese consumers spending more than in the USA over the last 12 months. This new consumer driven economy is fueling demand for foods, beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, household chemicals and other consumer products. Creating an increase in demand for the processing and packaging industry that serves FMCG manufacturers. ProPak China 2010, the country’s premier processing and packaging technology trade show will again be the focus for consumer goods and all product manufacturers in China and internationally when the show returns to Shanghai for its 16th edition from 14-16 July 2010 at Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

The rebound of the economy and surge in Chinese manufacturing is reflected by record demand for space at ProPak China 2010. According to the organizer, China International Exhibitions a total of 31,625sqm of space has been reserved for the show this year, representing 10% more area then at the 2009 event and offering displays of technology and innovative products from more than 500 companies from 23 countries and regions. Vicky Leung, Assistant Sales Director for ProPak China stated “some specialist sections of the show, particularly liquid product technology are already sold out”. “We have many more companies this year offering new packaging solutions for the fast growing liquid product market, particularly technology used in packaging of fruit juices, mineral water and beverages”. “Processing and packaging technology for dry goods manufacturing including snack food and pharmaceuticals has also seen significant growth”. Ms Leung added, “the annual growth of ProPak China, attracting more companies every year, will again in July 2010, offer the widest range of international and Chinese made processing, packaging and end line printing technology of any event worldwide”.

China is already the world's second largest packaging market next to US, and is expected to generate sales of RMB1.2 trillion by the end of 2010. Industry needs to closely follow the trends of the China market for their impact on the packaging industry worldwide. High-energy costs and calls for environment friendly packaging around the world have also resulted in strong growth rates for this sector in China. Sustainable packaging, a fast-growing segment in the global packaging industry will grow to 32% of the total packaging market in China by 2014, up from just 21% in 2009.
