Liquid technology sees record growth in China
SHANGHAI – 5th June 2009 – The China market for beer and beverage products continues to expand at an impressive rate, creating significant opportunities for suppliers of liquid technology. The engine for this growth comes from the increased purchasing power of Chinese consumers, particularly those living in large cities. China’s urban population is expected to grow from an estimated 600 million in 2007 to 1 billion in 2030, creating a vast new consumer market, reports the McKinsey Global Institute. China BevTek 2009, the 2nd Shanghai International Liquid Processing, Packaging and Material Exhibition taking place at Shanghai International Expo Centre (SNIEC), Pudong from 15-17 July 2009, is ideally timed for manufacturers of liquid technology to gain direct access to brewers and beverage product manufacturers who are investing in new production facilities to meet the increased demand for their products.

While beer consumption is on the wane in developed markets such as the UK, the Chinese are developing a taste for beer and particularly home grown lagers. Average annual beer consumption in China is about 28 litres per person and that is rising fast, but still way behind the UK’s average of almost 100 litres a person and about 70 litres in Japan. The Chinese beer market is dominated by a few large groups including Huarun Group (Snow Beer) and their partner SABMiller; Beijing Yanjing and Tsingtao. The beverage market for soft drinks is also experiencing rapid growth. According to Euromonitor’s latest report on the sector, total sales in China amounted to 283.6 billion yuan in 2008, a growth of 14.7% on 2007 consumption. Further, total output of all non-alcoholic drinks in the first quarter of 2009 amounted to 15.17 million tons, up 15% from the first quarter of 2008. The star sector of the soft drinks market is for fruit juice. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, production of non-carbonated drinks including fruit juices surged 332.9% compared to a 3.49% decline in soda production in the first quarter of 2009.

To meet demand, soft drink producers and brewers are forging ahead with investment projects including international giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo and domestic leaders including Huiyuan; Wahaha and Nongfu Spring. Coca-Cola announced in March 2009, that it would invest a total of US$2 billion into the Chinese market over the next 3 years. This considerable investment in new manufacturing facilities and expansion of existing plants exceeds the company’s total investment in China during the past 30 years.

“Senior management, plant managers and production engineers from this combination of Chinese and foreign brewers and beverage manufacturers is the target visitor audience for China BevTek 2009. Offering liquid technology manufacturers a multi million US$ market that is still in its early stages of development” says Vicky Leung, Project Director for China BevTek 2009, organised by China International Exhibitions - CIE .
